Their training consisted of several intense months and was the hardest in the world... they were even called "The Elite." They based it on physical fitness, small-arms, and political indoctrination. If they did exceptionally well, then they were awarded the SS Totenkopfring (a silver ring with a skull and cross bones on the front and other runic symbols around the sides). These rings could not be sold or inherited, it was taken to the grave.
Training was broken down into various levels. After training, they were sent to special schools for technique classes. They worked very intensely, drills and beliefs were "drilled" into their heads. What we consider normal military tactics were not at all allowed in the SS, such as the word "sir".
